Welcome to the Jubilate Choir
'Vivaldi's Gloria...the choir gave their usual lilting performance to match the lightness of the composer's music.' And '......in Britten's Saint Nicholas...The storm was terrific as was the singing....' Peter Steptoe, Croydon Advertiser (Dec 2011)
Jubilate Choir is a chamber choir of some 40 individuals of varying faiths and ethnicity ranging in age from early 20s to mid 80s. Always with professional soloists and musicians, our concerts are among the best in the south London area.
We have an interesting and wide ranging repertoire with music by well known composers such as Handel, Bach and Mozart as well as modern composers like John Rutter and Karl Jenkins. The Jubilate was one of the first choirs to perform The Armed Man, a dramatic and melodic Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins.
Our conductor and musical director Janet Haney is a prominent pianist, conductor and singing coach who performs on prestigious stages throughout the world. She is much in demand and works with the Welsh National Opera, Islandska Opera in Reykjavik and The State Theatre in Pretoria, to mention a few. Janet also performs with leading musicians and singers including Opera Babes and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
We rehearse in St Mark’s Church, Manor Park Road, West Wickham, on Mondays from 8-10 pm. and hold three major concerts a year as well as performances for charities and weddings.
Our Christmas and Easter concerts performed in St John’s Church, Upper Norwood, SE19 are the highlights of our year. St John’s is a striking brick structure dating back to the 1880s. Creating beautiful music in this atmospheric and dimly lit church with Janet Haney and women soloists in glittering gowns and male soloists in black ties, is an experience not to be missed.
'...Veni Sanctus Spiritus ...was beautifully sung and had the opening thrice heard ' Veni' tugging at my heart strings....Santa Maria, mater dei...was disarmingly simple yet perfectly balanced...' Peter Steptoe, Croydon Advertiser (p42 April 22nd 2011)
Our summer concert takes the form of an all day workshop with the Jubilate and anyone else who can sing, culminating in a late afternoon performance. The venue for this is St Matthew’s Church, Chichester Road, East Croydon a bright and modern building, very different from St John’s.
Janet Haney believes in showcasing young and vibrant performers from the Trinity College of Music in Greenwich or chamber groups like The Agon Trio, three up and coming musicians who met whilst studying in Moscow. Jubilate then becomes a platform where dynamic young singers and players can gain valuable experience.
The Jubilate choir welcomes new members. There are no auditions. Reading music is an advantage, but not a necessity, as long as you have a good voice and can sing in tune.
